Armchair and Side Table: Planning Distance for Beverages
In hotel lobbies, waiting areas and lounges, guests often face the same problem: they are seated comfortably but have no secure surface within reach. A water glass balances on the armrest, the coffee cup sits on the floor, the smartphone slips between the cushions. What appears to be a minor detail noticeably disrupts the stay. The solution lies in proper planning of the distance between seating and side table.
Arm's Reach Determines the Usable Radius
The distance between seat surface and table edge should be chosen so that a relaxed guest can reach for their beverage without standing up or leaning forward. As a rule of thumb: the table edge stands approximately half an arm's length from the front edge of the seat surface. Too close feels confining and restricts leg room, too far makes every movement a conscious act. When selecting Armchairs with wide armrests, this distance shifts slightly outward, as the armrest itself already provides a surface.
Height Difference Between Seat Surface and Tabletop
The tabletop should be at the same height or slightly higher than the armrest. This allows a glass to be placed securely without the arm having to be raised or lowered. For armchairs without armrests, the ideal table height is based on the seat height plus approximately a hand's width. A table that is too low forces bending, one that is too high appears disproportionate and makes reaching downward difficult.
Calculating Surface Area for Multiple Items
A side table rarely serves just one purpose. Alongside the beverage lie reading glasses, a magazine or tablet. The tabletop should therefore be large enough to accommodate several items side by side without anything falling off or spilling. Round tables with a diameter of approximately forearm length offer sufficient surface without dominating the space. Square variants use space more efficiently when the table stands between two armchairs.
Stability on Different Floor Coverings
A wobbly table renders any surface worthless. On carpet, the feet should stand wide enough not to sink in. On smooth floors such as tiles or parquet, sufficient weight in the base is needed so the table does not tip when someone leans on it. The selection of suitable Coffee Tables or compact side tables also depends on how much the surface yields and how frequently the table is moved.
Arrangement with Multiple Seats
In seating groups, two armchairs often share a common table. It then stands centrally between both seats so that each guest can reach it equally. The distance to each armchair remains identical, the table edge runs parallel to the seat edge. In L-shaped arrangements, the table shifts into the corner but remains accessible from both sides. What matters is that no one has to reach around the table or contort themselves.
Maintaining Freedom of Movement in the Space
The distance between armchair and table must not be considered in isolation. Behind it, enough space must remain so guests can stand up without bumping into anything. Likewise, lateral space is needed for passing by without anyone touching the table or endangering the beverage. A well-considered arrangement takes the entire movement area into account and leaves enough breathing room despite compact furnishing.
