Console Below the Mirror: Height for Comfortable Placement
When positioning a console beneath a mirror in the entrance area or bedroom, one often faces the question: at what height can the surface be used most comfortably? Mounted too high, placing keys or jewellery becomes a stretching exercise. Installed too low, one must bend down to reach something. The correct height determines whether the console truly functions in everyday use or merely serves a decorative purpose.
Natural Reach Height as a Starting Point
The surface should be positioned where the hand can reach without effort. For most people, this natural reach height lies between hip and elbow when the arm hangs loosely. This corresponds to a console height of approximately hip level or slightly above. In this position, objects can be placed and retrieved effortlessly, without having to raise the arm or bend down.
Consider Distance to the Mirror
Between the console surface and the lower edge of the mirror, sufficient space should remain so that vases, lamps or other decorative objects can be placed without obscuring the mirror. A hand's width of distance usually suffices to accommodate even taller objects. At the same time, the console appears visually connected to the mirror when the distance is not too great.
Consider Room Proportions
In rooms with high ceilings, the console may be mounted somewhat higher without appearing squat. In low rooms, a more restrained height is advisable so that the furnishing does not appear too bulky. The overall effect of console and mirror should visually elongate the room, not divide it horizontally. A narrow, delicate console tolerates a somewhat different height than a solid piece of furniture with a wide surface.
Test Everyday Use
Before mounting the console permanently, it is worthwhile to mark the planned height provisionally and rehearse typical movements. Imagine coming home and placing keys, or standing before the mirror in the morning and reaching for a watch. The height is correct when these movements flow smoothly, without having to stretch the arm or lean forward. With Consoles of varying heights, this adjustment can already be considered during selection.
Consider Different Usage Scenarios
In the entrance area, one usually stands briefly before the console to place or take something. In the bedroom, however, the surface is often used whilst seated, such as when putting on jewellery before the mirror. For these different situations, the ideal height may vary slightly. Consider how you will primarily use the console and align the installation accordingly.
