L-shaped sofa or two separate sofas: flexibility compared

When planning a seating group, the question often arises whether an L-shaped corner sofa or two separate sofas are the better solution. Both options offer a similar number of seats, but they behave differently in everyday use. For hotels, restaurants and retailers, what matters most is how well the furniture can be adapted to changing requirements. The following comparison shows what to consider in terms of floor space, rearranging, transport and use.

Room layout and floor space

An L-shaped sofa makes good use of a corner and combines the seating group into one closed unit. In return, it fixes the orientation: the longer side sits on the left or on the right, and this can usually not be changed later. Two separate sofas need slightly more space because a passage remains between the pieces. On the other hand, they can be placed at a right angle, facing each other or side by side. As a rule, about 40 to 50 centimetres should remain free between each seat and the table. In the Sofas section you will find both designs in various widths.

Rearranging and later use

If you reorganise rooms regularly, two separate sofas are an advantage. In a lobby or lounge, a conversation group can quickly become a row along the wall, for example for an event. In the case of a move or a renovation, two smaller pieces also fit more easily into a new floor plan. An L-shaped sofa is tied to the corner it was planned for. If the orientation does not suit the new room, often the only option is to place it freely in the room, which in turn requires a neatly finished back and more space.

Transport, delivery and replacement

Door widths, stairwells and lifts are decisive for the route into the building. Corner sofas are often delivered in two or more parts and connected on site, yet individual elements are frequently bulky. Two separate sofas are generally easier to carry and can be set up one at a time. During operation there is a further point: if a cover is damaged, one sofa can be removed temporarily without the whole seating group being missing. This applies in particular to baroque furniture with carved frames, which must be carefully protected during transport.

Which solution suits which use

An L-shaped sofa is suitable for rooms with a fixed use in which the corner permanently serves as a seating area, such as a suite or a private living room. It looks calm and offers a comfortable surface for reclining. Two separate sofas are the more flexible choice for lobbies, waiting areas, showrooms and all rooms whose use changes. Retailers can also offer them individually or as a pair. Before deciding, check the floor plan, the walking routes and how often the room is likely to be redesigned. The suitable option usually follows from this.
