Seasonal Planning: When Retailers Should Order What
Proper procurement planning determines liquidity and availability in the furniture trade. Those who order too late risk supply bottlenecks during peak season. Those who order too early tie up capital and warehouse space unnecessarily. A well-considered seasonal plan takes into account production times, transport routes and the typical demand curves of different furniture categories.
Spring Business: Order Outdoor Furniture and Dining Room Items from January
The spring business begins for resellers as early as winter. Garden furniture and outdoor ranges should be ordered by the end of January at the latest so that goods are available from March onwards. At the same time, demand for dining room furniture increases as many customers renovate or move before Easter. The selection of dining tables should therefore be fully available in the showroom from February. Production times of six to eight weeks plus transport time require ordering in December or early January.
Summer Business: Schedule Upholstered Furniture and Individual Pieces by March
The months from May to July are considered the strongest sales period for high-quality upholstered furniture and representative individual pieces. Hotels and restaurants prepare seasonal renovations during this period. Orders for sofas, armchairs and side furniture should be placed by the end of March at the latest. For custom fabrics or special orders, the lead time extends to ten to twelve weeks. Contract furnishers plan with a lead time of at least four months for larger projects.
Autumn Business: Order Seating and Tables from July
From September onwards, orders for interior furnishings pick up again. Catering establishments renew their seating after the summer season, retailers prepare for the Christmas business. Demand for Chairs increases significantly from October. An order in July secures availability for the autumn business. Conference furniture and reception areas are also frequently replaced during this phase as companies exhaust budgets before year end.
Year-End Business: Order Representative Furniture by September
The fourth quarter brings two opposing trends: on the one hand, businesses invest in representative furniture for reception areas and meeting rooms, on the other hand, willingness to accept longer waiting times decreases. Orders for November and December must therefore be placed by September at the latest. Consignment warehouses and buffer stocks help to serve short-term requests. Many furnishers already plan the spring collection for the following year in October.
Calculate Production Cycles and Transport Times
Standard furniture from European production requires four to six weeks lead time. For overseas goods, this period extends to eight to twelve weeks. Special orders, individual upholstery or special surface treatments require an additional two to four weeks. Furnishers should plan a buffer of at least 20 percent on the calculated delivery time for large projects. Seasonal bottlenecks in ports or with freight forwarders typically occur in spring and before year end.
Optimize Warehousing and Capital Commitment
Forward-looking seasonal planning reduces the necessary stock depth by 15 to 25 percent. Resellers should stock fast-moving items year-round, but carry seasonal items in larger quantities only during peak season. Consignment models with suppliers enable flexible responses to demand fluctuations without full capital commitment. A monthly sales analysis of the last two years reliably shows which product groups should be ordered at which time.
