What defines a French armoire

The armoire began as a tall cupboard for linen and clothes, and its form has barely changed. Typical features are a moulded or carved crown at the top, doors with shaped panels framed in raised mouldings, and a curved skirt between short cabriole feet. Hinges and escutcheons are often decorative in their own right.

The Louis XV version favours flowing rococo curves, shells and flowers. The Louis XVI version is more restrained, with straight lines, fluting, ribbons and laurel. Many buyers search for a Louis XV armoire or a rococo style wardrobe, and both describe the same elegant family of shapes rather than a strict historical copy.

Single, double, triple and larger wardrobes

A single French wardrobe with one door is ideal for a guest room, a dressing corner or a hallway. A double wardrobe with two doors is the traditional armoire format, typically around 110 cm wide and 230 cm high. It stores a surprising amount behind a slim façade.

Triple French wardrobes and larger units with four, five, six or even eight doors create a full wall of storage. A French armoire with mirror doors does two jobs: it provides a full length mirror and it makes the room feel larger and brighter. Bevelled mirror panels set into carved frames look especially refined. In a small bedroom this can replace a separate standing mirror.

Solid carved doors are the more traditional choice and suit rooms where the wardrobe should read as a piece of furniture rather than a reflective surface. Measuring the bedroom for an armoire

Measure three things before choosing: the wall width, the ceiling height and the depth available in front of the wardrobe. Allow at least 5 cm above a carved crown, since ornaments often rise above the main body. Hinged doors need their full width to open, so check that the bed or a chest of drawers does not block them.

Check the access route as well. Stairs, landings and door frames decide whether a tall cabinet can reach the room. Many larger wardrobes are built in sections for this reason. Place the wardrobe on a wall without windows and keep it clear of radiators to protect the wood and finish.

Combining the wardrobe with the rest of the room

Our wardrobes are built from solid wood such as beech, carved by hand and finished with paint, lacquer, gold leaf or metallic paint. Prices range from roughly €1,900 for a compact double wardrobe to around €28,500 for large, richly carved bedroom wardrobes.
