What makes a bed look French

French looking beds share a handful of clear features. The headboard is usually taller than the footboard and finished with a carved crest, often a shell, a ribbon or a spray of acanthus leaves. Legs are short and gently curved, and the side rails follow a soft serpentine line rather than a straight edge.

The Louis XV variant is the more flowing one, with asymmetric rococo ornament and rounded corners. The Louis XVI variant is calmer: fluted posts, straight lines, oval medallions and laurel garlands. Both belong to the same family, and both are what most buyers mean when they search for a French style bed frame.

Headboards: carved, upholstered or both

The headboard carries most of the character. A carved wooden headboard shows the craft of the joiner and the gilder, and it works well in white and gold or in a warm mahogany tone. An upholstered headboard adds comfort for reading in bed and softens the room acoustically, which matters in hotel suites.

Many of our French style headboards combine the two: a carved and gilded frame around a padded panel in satin, velvet or leather. Bed sizes explained: UK, EU and US

Size names differ from market to market, so it helps to think in mattress dimensions. In the UK a double mattress is 135 x 190 cm, a king 150 x 200 cm and a super king 180 x 200 cm. Across continental Europe the usual sizes are 140 x 200, 160 x 200 and 180 x 200 cm. A US queen is about 152 x 203 cm and a US king about 193 x 203 cm.

A French style king size bed with a carved frame is always larger than its mattress. The frame, the headboard and the rounded corners add width and length, sometimes 20 to 30 cm in each direction. One of our double beds, for example, measures 211 x 215 cm overall. Sizes vary from model to model, and not every design is offered in every size, so please check the stated dimensions of each bed and ask us if you need a specific mattress format.

Four-poster, canopy and rococo beds

A gold canopy bed or four-poster gives a room real presence. In the French manner the canopy is often a crown or a carved corona fixed to the wall above the headboard, with fabric falling to both sides. This needs less ceiling height than a full four-poster and suits period townhouses and hotel suites alike.

A rococo bed goes further in ornament: scrolls, shells and flowers run across the headboard and footboard, sometimes with mirrored or crystal inlays. Materials, quality and care

Our French style beds are built from solid wood, carved by hand, then painted, lacquered or gilded. Gold and silver finishes are applied as leaf or as fine metallic paint depending on the model. Upholstered headboards are covered in satin, velvet or leather. Prices range from roughly €2,700 to around €46,000, depending on size, carving and finish.

Care is simple. Dust carved surfaces with a soft, dry brush and avoid water and household cleaners on gilded areas. Keep the bed out of direct sunlight to protect lacquer and fabric.
