What makes furniture rococo
The key ornament is rocaille: carving inspired by shells, rocks and water, often set off centre. C and S scrolls frame drawers, crest rails and mirror tops. Lines are rarely straight. Fronts are bombé or serpentine, legs curve into cabriole shapes, and carving flows from one surface into the next.
Finishes are part of the style. Gold leaf effect highlights the carving, while the background is often white, cream, soft pink or pale green. Darker woods and black lacquer appear too, but always with gilded accents that catch the light.
Rococo versus baroque
Baroque furniture is heavy, symmetrical and built to impress in large halls. Rococo grew out of it but moved into smaller, more private rooms: salons, boudoirs and bedrooms. Ornament became lighter and asymmetrical, colours became paler, and comfort gained importance.

Rococo commodes, sideboards and dressing tables
The commode is the most characteristic rococo piece. Our collection includes commodes with five drawers in white and gold, a pink and gold commode of about 130 x 87 x 58 cm, and dramatic mirrored commodes in black with multicoloured painting and pink accents. Sideboards follow the same lines on a larger scale. A four door sideboard in white, gold and brown with a matching mirror measures around 280 cm and dominates a dining room or hotel reception. For bedrooms, a French style dressing table with mirror or a French style chest of drawers brings rococo charm to a more private space.
When choosing a commode, check the depth as well as the width. Deep bombé fronts project further into the room than straight fronts, so a hallway may need a slimmer model. Marble or glass tops protect the surface where lamps and vases stand.
Rococo sofas, settees and chairs
A rococo sofa has a curved back, often rising in the centre, with carved crest rails and scrolled arms. Rococo chairs are closely related to the Louis XV chair, with cabriole legs and shell carving on the crest. Combine one sofa with two armchairs in the same finish for a classic salon arrangement. Velvet, damask and patterned fabrics suit the style best.
Rococo mirrors
A rococo mirror is often the easiest way to bring the style into a room. Gilded frames with scrolls and shell crests work above a commode, a console or a fireplace. White and gold rococo mirrors brighten a hallway, while a gold rococo mirror adds depth to a darker wall.

A rococo living room works best with a clear focus. Choose one hero piece, such as a curved sofa or a mirrored commode, and build around it. Keep the walls light, repeat the gold in one or two accessories, and let the carving speak. Too many strong pieces in one room quickly feel crowded.
