A classic French vanity table has three parts: the table itself, a mirror and a seat. The table is usually 45 to 50 cm deep with one or more shallow drawers for brushes and cosmetics. Its legs are curved in the Louis XV manner or straight and fluted in the Louis XVI manner, and the apron below the top carries carving or a painted motif.
The mirror is either mounted on the table, hung on the wall above it or supplied as a separate standing piece. A stool or a small upholstered chair completes the set. Buyers who search for a French style dressing table with mirror usually want all three elements to match in colour and ornament.
Dressing table or dressing chest
A true dressing table has knee space, so you can sit comfortably in front of the mirror. It is lighter in appearance and suits smaller rooms. A dressing chest is a chest of drawers with a tall mirror above it. It offers much more storage and is meant for standing use or for a stool placed to one side.

Stools and vanity chairs
The seat should be low enough to slide under the table or sit neatly in front of it. A padded stool with curved legs is the most compact option. A white and gold vanity chair with a small upholstered back is more comfortable for longer sessions.
A Louis XV chair with a cabriole leg and a rounded back matches the flowing lines of a rococo vanity, while a more upright Louis XVI chair suits a straight legged table. Choose velvet or satin in a tone taken from the curtains or bed linen.
Size, placement and lighting
Allow a table width of at least 100 cm for comfortable use, and around 80 cm of free space behind the seat. The standard seat height is 45 to 48 cm with a table height of about 75 cm. Measure the total height of any fixed mirror, as some sets reach 180 cm.
Light is decisive. Place the dressing table at a right angle to a window so daylight falls evenly on the face. In the evening, a pair of baroque table lamps on either side of the mirror gives balanced, flattering light. Avoid a single overhead light, which casts shadows.
