This baroque wall mirror by Casa Padrino carries an openwork crown: above the frame sits a shell ornament cut free of the ground, with volutes curling away to both sides. Because the ornament is pierced rather than solid, the top reads as light instead of heavy, and the wall colour shows through it.

The frame itself is worked all the way round. Sculpted rose bouquets sit at the upper corners, a continuous band of leaves runs down the sides, and scrolls close off the lower corners. A fine bead moulding follows the mirror plate, which ends in a soft arch at the top instead of a hard edge.

At 90 x 158 cm the mirror is a tall portrait format, reaching from a sideboard almost to the ceiling. Hung low it shows a person full length; above a chest of drawers it draws the room upwards.

The gold finish is not flatly painted but follows the relief: raised parts catch the light, the recesses stay darker. That keeps the carving readable from several metres away instead of dissolving into one even surface.
