Armchair at the Desk: Setting Up a Workspace Without an Office Chair

Many hotel rooms, apartments and private work areas need to provide a writing space without making the room look like an office. A classic swivel chair with castors and gas lift does not suit a representative interior and disrupts the atmosphere. At the same time, the seating must be ergonomically adequate so that guests or residents can actually work there. The question is which armchair is suitable for this task and what you should look for when making your selection.

Coordinating Seat Height and Table Edge

The height of the seat in relation to the table top is crucial. For relaxed working, the distance between the seat and the underside of the table should be sufficient so that the thighs do not bump against it. The forearms rest comfortably on the table top without having to raise the shoulders. Before making your selection, check whether the seat height of the armchair matches your existing desk. Some models have a somewhat lower seat that is more suitable for coffee tables, while others are constructed higher and also work at a standard desk.

Armrests as Support or Obstacle

Armrests can provide relief when working by supporting the forearms. However, they must not be so high or wide that they prevent the armchair from being pushed close enough to the table. Test whether the armrests fit under the table top or whether they hit the outside. Models with narrow, inward-curved armrests can usually be pushed closer to the table. Some users also prefer armchairs without armrests because they offer more freedom of movement.

Upholstery and Backrest for Extended Sitting

A work armchair should have medium-firm upholstery that still provides support after extended periods. Cushions that are too soft are comfortable for brief moments but become tiring during concentrated work. The backrest should support the lumbar region in the lower area without you having to consciously lean back. A slightly reclined backrest enables relaxed sitting without you sliding forward. With Armchairs that have a high backrest, make sure that it does not extend so far back that it blocks the space behind the desk.

Stability on Smooth Floors

Unlike office chairs, armchairs usually have four legs or a continuous base. On smooth floors such as parquet or tiles, moving them can become more difficult, which is inconvenient when sitting down and standing up. Check whether the armchair stands stable and does not tip when you sit down from the side. Felt glides under the legs protect the floor and make moving easier. Models that are too light slide away when standing up, while those that are too heavy are difficult to move.

Visual Integration into the Room

An armchair at the desk should match the rest of the furnishings so that the work area does not appear isolated. In hotels and apartments, the same type of armchair can be used both at the desk and in the seating area, creating a calm overall appearance. In private rooms, the work armchair may also provide a contrast, as long as the colour and design language suit the room. Dark covers are easier to maintain, while light fabrics make small rooms appear more spacious.

Mobility Without Castors

Without castors, you have to lift or push the armchair when you want to change the distance to the table. This is less flexible than with a swivel chair, but it protects floor coverings and avoids rolling noise. For workplaces where you sit concentrating for extended periods, this is usually not a disadvantage. If you frequently move between the desk and other areas, you should choose a model that is not too heavy and can be moved easily.
