Armchair in Front of the Bookshelf: Planning a Reading Nook Within Reach

A reading nook requires more than just a comfortable seat. If you want books within easy reach, you must carefully consider the distance between furniture and shelving. Too much distance forces you to stand up, too little space feels cramped and leaves no legroom. Proper planning ensures that you sit comfortably while still being able to reach for a book at any time without leaving your seated position.

The Right Distance to the Shelf

Between the seat and the bookshelf, there should be just enough space for you to reach the middle shelf compartments with an outstretched arm. This means the backrest does not stand directly against the wall, but at a slight distance in front of it. This way, you can lean back and still have access to your books. Plan for additional lateral space if you wish to place a lamp or a small side table next to the seat.

Coordinating Seat Height and Shelf Height

The reach height depends heavily on the seat height. A low club chair brings you closer to the lower shelf compartments, while a higher wingback chair facilitates access to middle levels. Consider at which height your most frequently used books are located. The selection of Armchairs with different seat heights allows you to tailor the reading nook precisely to your shelf arrangement.

Using Armrests as Storage Surfaces

Wide armrests serve not only for comfort, but also as practical storage surfaces for the book you are currently reading, a cup, or reading glasses. Models with continuous, horizontal armrests offer more usable surface area than those with narrow or inward-sloping designs. Make sure the armrests are stable enough to safely support smaller items.

Including Lighting in the Planning

A reading nook only functions with sufficient light. Floor lamps require standing space next to the seat, wall lamps must be positioned so they do not collide with the shelf. If you wish to use a reading lamp with a swing arm, check in advance whether there is enough freedom of movement between the seat and the shelf. The light should fall on the book pages from above or from the side without causing glare.

Ensuring Freedom of Movement in Front of the Shelf

Even if the seat is positioned close to the shelf, you must occasionally stand up and step in front of the shelf to retrieve books from upper or lower compartments. Therefore, plan a narrow passage between the seat and the shelf that allows you to stand up and step forward. An armchair with a narrow footprint or slightly inward-sloping legs creates additional clearance here without reducing the seat surface itself.
