Armchair with Footstool: Coordinating Footrest with Seat Height
In hotel rooms, waiting areas and lounges, an armchair with footstool should offer genuine relaxation. Yet often the height of the stool does not match the seat surface, causing legs either to bend awkwardly or to overextend. This considerably reduces comfort and leads guests to avoid the combination or use it only briefly. A well-considered coordination of seat height and stool dimensions is therefore crucial for the quality of stay.
Why Height Difference Determines Comfort
The body relaxes best when thighs and lower legs form a slightly open angle. If the stool is too low, the knees sag downwards and the thigh muscles remain tense. If it stands too high, the edge presses against the backs of the knees, impeding circulation. Ideal is a stool height approximately a hand's width below the front edge of the seat surface. This allows the legs to rest comfortably without creating pressure.
Including Upholstery Thickness and Sink Depth
With softly upholstered models, the body sinks deeper than with firmly upholstered variants. The actual seat height is then considerably below the measurement of the empty seat surface. Therefore, with yielding upholstery, the stool should be somewhat lower so that the legs still rest comfortably after sinking in. With firm upholstery, the stool can be correspondingly higher without the knees being bent too sharply.
Considering Different User Groups
In public areas, people of different heights use the same seating group. A medium stool height offers the best compromise here. For hotel areas or contract furnishings where prolonged sitting is intended, a selection of Armchairs with matching stools is recommended. This allows the optimal combination to be chosen for each area without disadvantaging individual guests.
Visual Harmony and Spatial Effect
Besides ergonomic coordination, visual balance also plays a role. A stool that is too low in front of a voluminous armchair appears lost, one that is too high dominates the seating group. The top edge of the stool should lie approximately at half the height of the armrests, creating a calm, balanced appearance. In smaller rooms, this proportion helps prevent the furnishings from appearing bulky.
Practical Testing Before Decision
The best coordination results from trial sitting in the actual usage position. Lean back, place your feet on the stool and check whether the backs of the knees remain free and the lower legs rest comfortably. Ensure that you can hold the position for several minutes without pressure or tension developing. Only then is the combination suitable for continuous use.
