Bed and Console: Bedside Table with More Storage Space

In many bedrooms, a classic bedside table stands next to the bed, quickly reaching its limits. Lamp, book, water glass, telephone and perhaps a tray for small items: the surface is often barely sufficient, and additional items such as a vase or tray find no space. Those who need more order in the morning and evening or use the bedroom as a retreat for reading and relaxing quickly encounter practical limitations with a narrow bedside table. A console offers an elegant solution here without making the room appear cluttered.

Why a Console Works Next to the Bed

A console is narrower than a chest of drawers but considerably more generous than a bedside table. The elongated form creates enough storage space for everything that should be within reach, without the area next to the bed appearing too bulky. Particularly in rooms where Beds do not stand centrally against the wall or where a passageway must remain clear, a console fits more flexibly than a wide piece of furniture. It can also be placed offset to the side, so that access to the bed remains comfortable.

More Space for Lamp, Books and Decoration

On a console, there is room next to the bedside lamp for a small stack of books, a bowl for jewellery or keys and a carafe with glasses. Those who enjoy reading before falling asleep can also place a second light source without it becoming cramped. The continuous surface appears calmer than several small shelves and is easier to keep clean. Plants or a fragrance stone also find their place here without the console appearing overloaded.

Consider Height and Proportion

The top edge of the console should be approximately at mattress height or slightly above, so that you can comfortably reach for the lamp or water glass. Furniture that is too low forces you to bend down, whilst furniture that is too high appears disproportionate and makes access more difficult. Measure the height of your bed with mattress before making your selection, then the suitable console can be found more easily. A depth of approximately thirty to forty centimetres is usually sufficient to create enough storage space without the console protruding into the room.

Coordinate Style and Material with the Bed

For the console to appear harmonious next to the bed, it should match stylistically. A bed with curved forms works well with a console that also displays soft lines or playful details. With straight-lined Consoles with clear edges, a calmer overall appearance is created, which is suitable for modern or reduced interiors. The material also plays a role: wood appears warm and homely, lacquered surfaces bring elegance, and metal or stone set cooler accents.

Practical Addition for Asymmetrical Rooms

In bedrooms with sloping ceilings, alcoves or offset windows, a console can often be placed better than a square bedside table. It can also stand against a free wall when the bed does not find space directly next to it, and still serve as storage. Those who only have space for a piece of furniture on one side of the bed benefit from the larger surface that a console offers. This way, everything important remains within reach without the other side of the room appearing overcrowded.
