Bed with Bench: Using the Footboard as a Storage Zone
In hotels and apartments, guests often face the problem of wanting to set down clothing, luggage or bags without using the bed itself. A bench at the foot of the bed creates a clear storage surface and prevents textiles from ending up carelessly on the floor or the duvet becoming a makeshift storage area. At the same time, it structures the room visually and gives the bed a representative finish.
Storage Instead of Clutter
A bench at the foot of the bed provides a defined zone for everything that does not immediately belong in the wardrobe. Dressing gown, towels, the jacket for the evening or the shopping bag find their place here. Particularly in smaller rooms where there is no separate armchair, the bed bench takes on this function. It signals to the guest: items may be placed here without appearing untidy.
Seating for the Moment
The bench serves not only as storage but also as seating. Putting on shoes, sitting down briefly to make a phone call, or reading the newspaper in peace in the morning: all this is comfortably achieved at the foot of the bed. In hospitality or contract furnishing, operators appreciate this dual usability because it saves furniture whilst still fully equipping the room.
Visual Completion of the Bed
A bed bench frames the bed and gives it presence. This applies particularly to Beds with high headboards or elaborate upholstery, which receive a harmonious complement through a matching bench at the foot. The bench closes off the silhouette at the bottom and makes the bed appear less isolated in the room. In suites or larger rooms, this combination appears particularly representative.
Observing Dimensions and Proportions
The bench should be narrower than the bed width so that it does not protrude beyond the edges. A low seat height integrates unobtrusively, whilst a higher bench shows more presence. The distance is important: sufficient space should remain between the bed end and bench to walk past comfortably and change the bed linen. In narrow rooms, a shorter bench that occupies only part of the bed width may be sensible.
Coordinating Material and Cover with the Surroundings
The bed bench does not necessarily have to match the bed, but should harmonise with the overall furnishing. An upholstered cover in the same fabric quality as the curtains or armchairs creates coherence. Wooden legs or a metal frame can provide accents if they recur in other furniture. When selecting Benches, it is worthwhile paying attention to robust covers that withstand frequent sitting and storage without wearing out quickly.
Care and Cleaning in Operation
In daily hotel operation, the bench must be easy to clean. Smooth surfaces can be wiped down quickly, removable covers facilitate washing. Ensure that the bench stands firmly and does not slip when guests sit on it or place heavy suitcases. A solid construction pays off in the long term and reduces repair effort.
