Coffee Table and Console in the Living Room: Using Two Storage Levels
In many living rooms, a coffee table stands in front of the sofa while the wall surfaces remain unused or are only decorated with pictures. However, the spatial effect can be significantly improved if you additionally place a console against the wall. The two pieces of furniture complement each other in their function and create different height levels that add more depth to the room. At the same time, you gain storage space for decoration, books or lighting without the room appearing cluttered.
The Coffee Table as Central Storage Surface
The coffee table forms the functional centre of the seating area. Here you place drinks, display magazines or arrange a bowl of fruit. The low position makes it the ideal work surface for anyone sitting on the sofa. When selecting Coffee Tables, you should ensure that the height matches the seat height of your upholstered furniture. The table top should be approximately level with the seating surfaces or slightly below, so that you can reach comfortably without stretching.
The Console as Vertical Element
A console usually stands against the wall opposite the sofa or to the side of it. It uses the vertical dimension of the room and draws the eye upwards. On its narrow top, vases, framed photos or a table lamp find their place. Underneath, there is often still room for baskets or low stools. The slender design makes consoles particularly suitable for rooms where you do not want to sacrifice much floor space but still need an additional storage surface.
Two Levels for More Design Flexibility
When you combine both pieces of furniture, an interplay of horizontal and vertical lines emerges. The coffee table remains functional and tidy, while the console takes on decorative tasks. You can place taller objects on the console that would obstruct the view on the coffee table. A floor lamp next to the console or a wall light above it creates additional accents. The two pieces of furniture do not need to be in the same style, but should be coordinated in their colour scheme or materiality.
Consider Proportions and Spatial Effect
The size of both pieces of furniture should suit the room. A bulky coffee table requires a correspondingly dimensioned console for the balance to be right. In small living rooms, delicate models appear lighter, while generous rooms can also accommodate more expansive forms. The selection of Consoles ranges from narrow wall tables to wider variants with drawers. Ensure that there is enough freedom of movement between the coffee table and sofa and that the console does not block the passage.
Coordinate Materials and Surfaces
Wood, metal, glass or marble define the character of the furniture. If you mix different materials, at least one connecting element should be present: for example, the same wood colour or a similar metal tone in the legs. High-gloss surfaces reflect light and make the room appear larger, matt surfaces create a calmer atmosphere. The combination of a solid coffee table and a delicate console creates an exciting contrast without the interior becoming restless.
