Console beneath the mirror: height for convenient placement
In hotels, guesthouses and apartment complexes, a console is often positioned beneath the wall mirror in the entrance area or hallway. Guests place keys, handbags or smartphones there before looking at themselves in the mirror. If the console is mounted too high, the surface feels awkward and is rarely used. If it stands too low, one must bend down, and the mirror appears to float visually. The correct height determines whether the furnishing functions properly or remains merely decorative.
Working height determines usage
A console is used most frequently when its upper edge is at hip height. This corresponds approximately to the height of a kitchen worktop or a sideboard top. In this range, objects can be placed and picked up comfortably without stretching or bending. For most adults, this means an upper edge between knee and waist, in the middle area of the body.
Lower edge of mirror as orientation
The wall mirror should hang so that its lower edge ends just above the console top. A narrow gap, about a hand's width, is sufficient. This creates a visual unit, and the mirror does not appear detached. At the same time, enough space remains to place taller objects such as a vase or lamp on the console without them obscuring the mirror. The upper edge of the mirror then depends on the ceiling height and the size of the mirror itself.
Hallways and narrow passages
In narrow hallways or passages, the console should not protrude too far into the room. A shallow depth is sufficient for placing keys or post. The height nevertheless remains in the middle range so that the surface is not overlooked. The selection of Consoles includes models with different depths that are also suitable for tight areas. It is important that the console does not obstruct movement but is still present enough to be used.
Combination with lighting
If a table lamp is to stand on the console, its height must be included in the planning. The lamp shade should not cover the lower edge of the mirror but end just below it or stand offset to the side. The light then falls on the surface and simultaneously illuminates the face of the person in front of the mirror. A console that is too high would place the lamp in an unfavourable position and visually divide the mirror.
Material and stability
The console must safely bear the weight of the objects placed on it. Heavy vases, books or several bags at once require a stable construction and secure wall mounting. Solid woods or metal frames provide security here. The surface should be easy to care for, as it is touched daily and collects dust, fingerprints or spilled liquids. Lacquered or sealed surfaces are easier to clean than open-pored materials.
