Console in Front of the Stairs: Leave Space for Passage
A console in the hallway or stairwell creates storage space and adds a design accent. However, if it stands too close to the stairs, the passage becomes narrow, people have to squeeze past sideways or bump into it with bags and coats. In commercial properties, the question of traffic safety also arises. The correct distance between furniture and stair approach determines whether the solution works or becomes an obstacle.
Plan Minimum Width for Passage
As a rule of thumb: between the console edge and stair stringer, enough centimetres should remain free for a person with outstretched arms to pass comfortably. In residential buildings, this means a clear width that allows passing without physical contact with the furniture. In hotels, guesthouses or apartment buildings, the passage must be wider so that two people can pass each other or someone with luggage does not get caught.
Adapt Console Depth to the Situation
The narrower the available space, the shallower the furniture should be. Consoles are available in different designs, from wall-mounted variants to deeper pieces with drawers. Choose the depth so that sufficient movement space remains after installation. An overly generous console appears bulky in a narrow staircase area and takes up space you need for passage.
Check Lateral Positioning
The console does not always have to be centred or directly opposite the stairs. An offset arrangement is often suitable, where the furniture is placed to the side of the staircase. This keeps the main passage clear, and the console serves as a reception point in the entrance area without disturbing the flow of traffic. Ensure that nearby doors can still open fully.
Observe Safety Aspects in Properties
In commercially used buildings, stricter requirements apply to escape routes and passage widths. Here, a console must not fall below the prescribed minimum distance. If in doubt, clarify with the fire safety officer or architect which dimensions must be observed. Stability also plays a role: furniture that wobbles or tips when touched does not belong in a heavily frequented passage area.
Visual Effect and Proportions
A console in front of the stairs can structure the space and give it character. Ensure that the furniture fits the surroundings in height and does not appear too dominant. A low model leaves the view to the stairs clear, a higher one can function as a room divider. The balance between function and aesthetics determines whether the arrangement appears harmonious or visually narrows the hallway.
