Console Next to the Bed: Storage Without a Classic Nightstand

In many bedrooms, there is insufficient space next to the bed for a conventional nightstand, or the room layout only allows for narrow furniture. Hotels and apartments are also increasingly looking for solutions that offer storage without narrowing the space. A console can be an elegant alternative here: it provides a surface for a lamp, book and alarm clock, but takes up considerably less depth than a classic nightstand.

Why a Console Next to the Bed Works

Consoles are generally much narrower than ordinary nightstands and protrude only slightly into the room. This makes them ideal for tight passageways or for rooms where the bed is positioned close to the wall. Despite their shallow depth, they offer sufficient surface area for the most important items you want within reach at night. If you can do without drawers, a console provides lightness and clarity.

Consider Height and Proportions

The console should be approximately at mattress height or slightly below, so that you can comfortably reach for your phone or a glass of water. A console that is too high appears disproportionate and makes use difficult, while one that is too low forces you to bend down. Ensure that the width of the console matches the size of the bed: next to a wide double bed it may be somewhat more expansive, next to a narrow single bed it should remain restrained.

Coordinate Material and Style with the Bed

The choice of console depends on the style of the Beds and the rest of the furnishings. A bed with a curved headboard harmonises well with a console in a similar design language, while a simple upholstered bed also accommodates a straight-lined console. Wood, lacquered surfaces or metal can be chosen depending on the desired room effect. It is important that the console does not appear too delicate, but provides visual stability.

Utilise Storage Space Under the Console

Many Consoles feature a continuous shelf or an additional level below the main surface. You can use this for books, magazines or a flat storage box. This keeps the upper surface free for a lamp and alarm clock, while maintaining order below. In guest rooms or hotels, this solution is particularly practical because it appears tidy yet remains flexible.

Lighting and Decoration

A table lamp on the console should not be too wide, so that it does not occupy the entire surface. Narrow lamps with a stable base are more suitable than expansive models. Next to the lamp, there is room for a small tray on which you can place jewellery or a watch. Avoid too many decorative items, so that the console retains its practical function and does not appear cluttered.
