Sofa and Display Cabinet in the Same Room: Coordinating Furniture Heights

When furnishing a living room or salon, it often becomes apparent that the seating group and display cabinet do not harmonize visually. This is rarely due to style or color, but usually to height. A display cabinet that is too tall appears bulky next to a low sofa, while a sofa that is too low makes the cabinet seem out of place. The eye searches for a common line, for a relationship between the pieces of furniture. Without this relationship, the room appears restless.

The Backrest as a Reference Line

The upper edge of the backrest is the most important height in the room. It determines where the eye comes to rest when you sit on the sofa or enter the room. A display cabinet whose upper edge aligns with this height or only slightly exceeds it integrates harmoniously. If the cabinet stands significantly higher, a disruption occurs. The backrest should therefore not be considered in isolation, but as part of a horizontal line that runs through the room.

Low Sofas Require Low Display Cabinets

Modern Sofas often have a low backrest that barely extends above the seat. This creates lightness, but requires equally restrained companions. A floor-to-ceiling display cabinet would dominate here and visually overwhelm the sofa. Display cabinets that nestle close to the backrest height or only slightly exceed it are more suitable. This keeps the room airy, and the furniture forms a unit.

High Backrests Can Accommodate More Volume

Classic upholstered furniture with a high, curved backrest also allows for taller accompanying cabinets. Here, the display cabinet may well be wall-filling, as long as its upper edge does not extend far beyond the backrest. The proportions remain balanced when both pieces of furniture have similar vertical dimensions. A cabinet that is too low would appear lost next to such a sofa.

Consider Distance and Sight Lines

If the display cabinet stands directly next to the sofa, the height must match precisely. If it stands opposite or on another wall, it may be somewhat higher, because the distance softens the difference in size. What matters is whether you look directly at the display cabinet from the sofa. If so, your gaze should not run into a wall that is too high, but should be able to move along a calm horizontal line.

Display Cabinet as a Room Divider

If the display cabinet is meant to structure a large room or stand behind the sofa, different rules apply. Here it may be higher, because it functions not as an accompanying piece, but as an independent element. Nevertheless, it should not be arbitrarily tall. A good rule of thumb: the upper edge should be at eye level when you are standing, not above. This keeps the room manageable. The selection of Showcases includes different heights, so a suitable solution can be found for every room situation.

Uniform Heights Create Calm

When several pieces of furniture stand in the room, it is worthwhile to pay attention to a common upper edge. Sofa, display cabinet, sideboard and shelving should not protrude wildly in all directions, but should form a continuous line. This creates order without making the room appear rigid. Small deviations are permitted, as long as the basic direction is correct.
