"Dourga" is one of the famous dance figures of Art Deco: a dancer in a skin-tight costume, arms wide open, her gaze lowered, at the end of a movement. The name points to the Indian goddess Durga, who occupied the Paris stages of the 1920s and with them the sculptors.
The costume is the real wealth of this sculpture: hundreds of gilded dots, rows of pearls and almond shapes lie over the green patinated bronze, each one chased individually. Cap, hands and feet are set off in polished gold, and the headdress carries a pale pearl.
At 137 cm tall and 26 kg on a heavy round base the figure is a room sculpture. Against a dark wall, in a bay window, beside a fireplace or in a hotel lobby the gold comes into its own, travelling across the whole costume in raking light.
Solid bronze, cast using the lost-wax process, chased and patinated by hand. A collector's piece for everyone who likes Art Deco and Baroque in full splendour rather than discreetly.
