The motif
Two legionaries face each other in mirror image, each with a raised short sword and a round shield whose centre is filled by a sculpted lion's head. Broad shoulder flaps lie over the scale armour, below it falls the strip skirt, greaves sit on the legs. The helmet carries a tall plume, the sword pommel ends in a ram's head. Both stand on their own square ground plate.

Craftsmanship and casting
Both figures are individual casts, shield, sword and plume are made separately and fitted only at the end. The green patina lies denser in the recesses than on the raised areas, so that scales, straps and musculature stand out from the surface. The sculpture is cast in solid bronze using the lost wax process, the technique that has been in use since antiquity. Every piece is chased and patinated individually by hand, and only then does the final colour appear.

Placement and effect
A pair of this size only works symmetrically: to the left and right of an entrance, at the foot of a staircase or as the opening of an axis in the garden. The distance should be at least twice the shoulder width, otherwise the passage feels narrow. In a hotel, a restaurant or a reception hall the two set the tone before a word is spoken.

Material and care
Bronze does not age and is practically maintenance free, a dry soft cloth is all it takes. Because every piece is cast and patinated by hand, no two are identical: slight variations in tone and surface are part of the process and are not a defect.
