The motif
A smooth column three metres high, tapering slightly upwards, set below on a stepped base with a torus and closed above by a plain Tuscan capital with a projecting abacus. The shaft is unfluted and lives solely from the figuring of the stone, which ranges from sand colour to grey.

Craftsmanship and stone
Shaft, base and capital are carved separately and assembled on site; the shaft is divided because of transport length. The surface is deliberately not polished but left bush-hammered, so that it looks like a building element that has always been there. The piece is worked from a natural block of marble, roughed out by hand, modelled and finally ground and polished. Every block brings its own veining, so no two pieces turn out alike.

Placement and effect
A column of this height is architecture, not decoration: it carries a conservatory, marks a gateway, articulates a tall hall or stands in pairs at a flight of steps. Because of its height and weight it needs a load-bearing, level base and is erected only with lifting gear.

Material and care
Marble is a natural stone and ages with dignity, a soft dry cloth is all it takes for dusting. Acidic cleaners, vinegar and descalers do not belong on the surface, they attack the limestone. Veining, colour gradients and small inclusions are natural features of the material and not a defect.
