A bearded gentleman in uniform coat, the broad sash of an order across his chest, a richly embroidered epaulette on the shoulder. The gaze goes calmly to the side, the posture upright and without pathos. Beard and hair are finely strand-worked, the embroidery of the shoulder pieces suggested stitch by stitch.

Craftsmanship and stone
The stone is deliberately not polished to a high gloss but ground to a satin matt; this keeps the fine drawing of beard and embroidery readable so that it does not disappear in the highlights. The piece is worked from a natural block of marble, roughed out by hand, modelled and finally ground and polished. Every block brings its own veining, so no two pieces turn out alike.

Placement and effect

Material and care
Marble is a natural stone and ages with dignity, a soft dry cloth is all it takes for dusting. Acidic cleaners, vinegar and descalers do not belong on the surface, they attack the limestone. Veining, colour gradients and small inclusions are natural features of the material and not a defect.
