The motif
Hypnos, in Greek mythology the god of sleep, carries his wings not on his back but at his temples. The face is youthfully soft, the lids half lowered, the curled hair falling in heavy waves over the base of the wings. The head is slightly turned, as if about to fall asleep.

Craftsmanship and stone
The bust is worked all round, including the reverse with the folded wings. It stands on its own socle of brown veined marble, set in contrast to the white. The piece is worked from a natural block of marble, roughed out by hand, modelled and finally ground and polished. Every block brings its own veining, so no two pieces turn out alike.

Placement and effect
A calm motif better placed in a bedroom, a library or a dressing room than in a busy living area. Set at eye level with soft, indirect light, the half-closed gaze shows to best effect.

Material and care
Marble is a natural stone and ages with dignity, a soft dry cloth is all it takes for dusting. Acidic cleaners, vinegar and descalers do not belong on the surface, they attack the limestone. Veining, colour gradients and small inclusions are natural features of the material and not a defect.
