A bedroom rarely needs more than one bold decision. This Casa Padrino luxury bed headboard in deep turquoise is that decision. Two metres of rich velvet, drawn deep into diamonds, and the rest of the room is free to stay quiet: pale walls, white linen, a dark floor. Nothing more is required.

The deep tufting is the reason this shade never looks flat. Every diamond casts its own shadow, and because velvet returns the light differently from every angle, the colour travels between petrol, emerald and a cool blue-green. In the morning it is a different colour than it is at night under warm light.

Every button is set by hand. This is craft in the literal sense: the upholsterer draws the fabric, lays the fold and sets the button, row after row, until the pattern stands evenly across the full width. That is how a good capitonné is recognised – by the calm of its grid, not by its size.

Beneath the cover works a body of solid wood with dimensionally stable polyester foam. The piece stands securely against the wall, does not lose its contour and withstands the everyday reality of someone leaning against it to read in the evening.

In a hotel suite or a boutique hotel, a headboard like this takes on the role a large format painting would otherwise play: it gives the room a colour people remember. In a private bedroom it does exactly the same, only for you.
