This baroque wall mirror by Casa Padrino takes the shape of the classic ornate mirror and reverses the colour: the carved frame is finished in deep matt black, and only the narrow inner edge around the mirror plate stays gold. That single bright line holds the whole surface together.

The carving is the same as on the gold model: an openwork crown of shell ornament and volutes above the frame, sculpted rose bouquets at the upper corners, a continuous band of leaves down the sides. In black the form reads differently. Instead of shining, the frame works with shadow: the recesses run dark, the edges catch a little grazing light.

That suits rooms where a gold mirror would be too much. Against a light wall it stands as a clear silhouette; in a darkly painted room the frame almost disappears and what remains is the reflecting plate with a gold rim.

At 90 x 158 cm in portrait format it reaches from a chest of drawers almost to the ceiling and, hung low enough, shows a person full length. The 26 kg call for a solid wall fixing.
