This wall mirror by Casa Padrino does without any ornament. Its effect comes from the width of the frame and its profile alone: the moulding is stepped several times and falls away in shallow hollows towards the mirror plate.

The gold leaf finish is not even but shows fine vertical bands, the kind that appear when single leaves are laid on. That takes the hardness out of the gold, keeps it warm rather than metallic, and lets the frame reflect at different depths depending on the light.

At 100 x 160 cm this mirror belongs to the large formats. It works hung on the wall or leaning behind a sideboard, and in a narrow room it visibly doubles the depth. At 29 kg it needs a load-bearing wall, or secure fixing against tipping if it stands.
