Bed Without Nightstand: Using a Console at the Head End

In smaller bedrooms or with asymmetrical floor plans, there is often no space for traditional nightstands. If you place the bed with its headboard against the wall, you face the question of where to put your reading lamp, alarm clock and water glass. A narrow console at the head end of the bed offers a practical solution that creates storage space without narrowing the room. It uses the wall space next to the headboard and can be positioned flexibly.

Why the Head End Works

The head end of the bed is where you rest your head. A console on this wall does not get in the way when you get up, and you can reach everything comfortably while lying down. Unlike a nightstand next to the sleeping surface, it does not take up floor space that you need for walking through. This makes it particularly suitable for narrow rooms where every centimetre counts. The console stands flush against the wall and extends into the room only as far as its depth dictates.

Which Depth Makes Sense

For the head end, shallow models are suitable that extend no more than a hand's width into the room. They offer enough surface for a lamp and a book without you bumping into them when getting up. Deeper consoles often appear bulky in this position and take up too much visual space. Make sure that the top edge is approximately at mattress height, then you can reach everything without contortions.

Combination with Bed Design

The console should match the style of the Beds, but works independently. With models featuring a high headboard, you can place the console to the side, with low frames it stands directly against the wall behind. If the bed stands freely in the room, the console can also be used as a room divider that separates the sleeping area from the rest of the room. In this case, the back of the console should also be attractively designed.

Consider Lighting

A table lamp on the console replaces the traditional nightstand lamp. Choose a model with an adjustable shade so you can direct the light for reading without disturbing your partner. Alternatively, a wall lamp can be mounted directly above the console, which saves space on the storage surface. Check in advance whether a socket is within reach or whether you need to plan cable routing.

Coordinate Material and Appearance

The selection of Consoles ranges from slender metal frames to solid wood designs. For the head end, light surfaces are suitable that do not visually reduce the room. Dark woods or ornate models quickly appear dominant here, especially if the wall behind is painted in colour. A console with an open structure, such as with delicate legs, makes the room appear airier than a closed body.

Pay Attention to Practical Details

If you use the console as storage, it should stand stable and not wobble when you reach for the water glass in the dark. Models with a drawer offer additional storage space for small items that would otherwise lie on the surface. Make sure that the height matches the mattress: if the console is too low, you have to bend down, if it is too high, reaching becomes uncomfortable. A height just below the mattress edge has proven effective.
