Console in the Dining Room: Sideboard for Food and Tableware

Many dining rooms lack a practical surface between the kitchen and table. Guests must wait while you make multiple trips to the kitchen, and when clearing up, the tableware piles up on the dining table. A console against the wall creates precisely the intermediate station that noticeably facilitates serving and clearing. It takes up little space and can be accommodated even in narrow dining areas.

The Right Position in the Room

Position the console so that you can approach it comfortably from the table without having to move chairs. A wall side parallel to the table is particularly suitable. The distance to the table edge should be large enough so that guests do not bump into it when standing up. In open-plan kitchens, a console between the cooking and dining area forms a natural boundary without dividing the space.

Keeping Food Warm and Preparing

On the console, you can place platters, bowls and pots before guests help themselves. This relieves the dining table and gives everyone the opportunity to take second helpings. With multi-course menus, you prepare the next course while people are still eating. Bread basket, water carafe and condiments find their fixed place here and are within reach without being in the way.

Intermediate Storage for Tableware When Clearing

After the meal, plates, glasses and cutlery pile up. Instead of carrying everything to the kitchen immediately, you collect the tableware on the console. This is quicker, and the table is free for dessert or coffee. Guests remain seated, and you do not have to shuttle back and forth through the room multiple times. Later, you load the dishwasher at your leisure.

Storage Space for Table Linen and Cutlery

Models with drawers offer space for napkins, tablecloths and cutlery that you only need for special occasions. This way, you have everything within reach without having to set up extra cupboards in the dining room. Candles, placemats and small serving aids can also be stored in the drawers. The surface remains free for ongoing operations.

Design and Material

When choosing Consoles, select a version that matches the rest of the furnishings and is easy to clean. Dark woods and matt surfaces show stains less quickly than light lacquers. The height should be chosen so that you can reach over it comfortably without bending down. A console that is too low makes working difficult, one that is too high appears disproportionate in the room.

Combining Decoration with Function

Between meals, the console can also take on decorative tasks. A vase, a bowl of fruit or a tray with glasses give the room structure without blocking the usable surface. Ensure that the decoration can be quickly cleared away when you need the surface for serving. This keeps the console flexible and fulfils both functions equally.
