Dining Table and Bench: When the Combination Saves Space

Dining Table and Bench: When the Combination Saves Space

In restaurants, breakfast rooms and common areas, there is often less floor space available than the number of guests requires. Individual chairs need room to move backwards, and space must remain between rows of tables for passage. A bench against the wall or under the window makes better use of the room depth and creates more seating on the same floor area. At the same time, a calmer visual effect is achieved because fewer furniture edges and chair legs divide the space.

When a Bench is Worthwhile

The combination of table and bench works where a wall or window provides backing. The bench stands fixed, guests slide in from the side. This saves the distance a chair needs for pushing back. On the opposite side of the table, chairs remain so that seating there is also comfortable. In narrow rooms or with rows of tables along the window front, you often gain an additional row of seating without the room feeling cramped.

Which Bench Depth is Suitable

A bench should be deep enough for comfortable sitting, but not so deep that legs dangle in the air. A medium depth is sufficient for most guests and combines well with standard Dining Tables. Benches that are too shallow appear makeshift, those too deep take up unnecessary space. Ensure that sufficient distance remains between the table edge and the front edge of the bench so that guests do not bump when sitting down.

Upholstery and Cover

An upholstered seat noticeably increases comfort, especially when guests sit for longer periods. The cover should be durable and easy to clean. Smooth surfaces can be wiped down more quickly than coarsely woven fabrics. In catering, dark or patterned covers prove effective because they show signs of wear less. Continuous upholstery without seams in the seat surface makes maintenance even easier.

Visual Effect in the Room

A long bench along the wall calms the room appearance and makes the space look tidier. Where many individual chairs create restlessness, the bench creates a clear line. This applies especially in rooms with several rows of tables or with open floor plans. The selection of Benches ranges from simple wooden benches to lavishly upholstered models, so a suitable solution can be found for every interior style.

Flexibility with Changing Requirements

Benches are less easy to rearrange than chairs. Those who frequently change seating arrangements or group tables differently for events should consider this. In fixed catering concepts or breakfast rooms with consistent layouts, this plays no role. There, the advantage of better space utilisation prevails. Combine bench and chairs so that service staff can still reach the tables easily and guests can get in and out comfortably.
