The motif
Two lansquenets in doublet, wide breeches and broad plumed hat stand propped on their halberds, one hand on the hip, one leg set loosely forward. The two figures are worked as mirror images and look at one another. The halberd shafts are slender and noticeably lighter than the figures.

Craftsmanship and finish
The figures are cast in cast iron, deliberately left untreated so that over time it forms a dense, even layer of rust. This layer protects the material and is expressly intended, not wear. The frame is bent by hand from round iron, welded and dressed, the ornaments applied one by one. Finally the piece is primed and lacquered in several layers, the last layer taken back slightly at the edges so that the surface looks used.

Placement and effect
Guard figures belong at a passage: left and right of a door, a gateway, at the foot of a flight of steps. At a good metre and a half they stand right without a plinth. Usable outdoors, where the rust surface is precisely the point.

Material and care
The furniture is made for outdoors and tolerates sun and rain. Over the winter it should be stored dry or covered, which noticeably extends the life of the lacquer. Small scratches can be touched up with a lacquer pen, stubborn dirt comes off with water and a soft brush.
