The motif
A heron stands on the shell of a tortoise, its neck raised steeply and its beak wide open. The two animals are an old pairing of garden art, the swift bird on the slow armoured one, and the jet of water rises from the beak.

Craftsmanship and casting
The plumage is chased feather by feather, the long legs finely ribbed, the tortoise shell carries a light green patina that sets it apart from the warm brown of the bird. The water line runs inside and a pump connection is prepared. The sculpture is cast in solid bronze using the lost wax process, the technique that has been in use since antiquity. Every piece is chased and patinated individually by hand, and only then does the final colour appear.

Placement and effect
At 175 cm the heron rises above any bank planting and remains visible from a distance. It stands best in shallow water or on a firm slab at the pond edge; pump and power connection are provided on site.

Material and care
Bronze is weatherproof and may stand outdoors all year round, the surface develops its own grown patina over the years. Before the first frost the pump and the water line are drained and the basin is left dry. Because every piece is cast and patinated by hand, no two are identical.
