The motif
Two pelicans perch on broken wooden posts of the kind found on harbour moles: one rests with its beak closed, the other opens it wide and spouts the water. The posts carry a light weathered patina as if they had long stood in salt water.

Craftsmanship and casting
The plumage is chased feather by feather and patinated warm brown, the posts are kept in verdigris and carry the grain of the wood in the cast. Both pieces belong together and are delivered as a pair. The sculpture is cast in solid bronze using the lost wax process, the technique that has been in use since antiquity. Every piece is chased and patinated individually by hand, and only then does the final colour appear.

Placement and effect
The birds work best as a pair to the left and right of an approach, on a jetty or in shallow water. Only one of the two carries water, the second stands beside it as a calm counterpoint.

Material and care
Bronze is weatherproof and may stand outdoors all year round, the surface develops its own grown patina over the years. Before the first frost the pump and the water line are drained and the basin is left dry. Because every piece is cast and patinated by hand, no two are identical.
